Advanced methodologies for th study of environmental impacts – AIMSE

This research group focuses, on the one hand, on the analysis of the life cycle of processes and products, as well as on the critical evaluation of LCA results and methodologies. This includes the identification of hotspots to improve the interpretation and prioritization of environmental impacts. The main objective is to promote the selection of the most appropriate specific techniques for each case study and to develop new advanced methodologies that represent a significant step forward in Life Cycle Assessment studies. Through this work, the group aims to contribute to the transition towards more sustainable systems by providing more up-to-date, comprehensive, and innovative scientific tools.
On the other hand, closely linked to this line of research, the group is also dedicated to developing more accurate and efficient advanced methods for environmental impact assessment, as well as to providing sustainable solutions to specific environmental challenges. This includes studies across a wide range of fields in which the group has extensive experience, such as environmental impact assessment, advanced determination of microplastics in water bodies, sustainability studies in air transport, renewable energy, circular economy, and waste management.
Nicolás Laguarda Miró has been a full-time Professor at UPV since 2000. His career combines research, teaching, and university management in chemical, electronic, environmental, and sensor engineering, with a strong focus on sustainability technologies for industry, the environment, and society.
He holds three recognized research sexenios and over fifteen years of sustained research leadership. Between 2007 and 2010, he coordinated multidisciplinary teams at IIAMA-UPV, working on quality analysis and control of coastal waters in the Comunitat Valenciana. Since 2011, at IDM, he has led the research line on Microelectronic Applications for Food and Environmental Quality Control, specializing in impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical sensors for non-destructive assessment of fruit, food, and agro-industrial processes.
In 2025, he founded and is the principal investigator of the group AIMSE, driving interdisciplinary research in Life Cycle Assessment and technological solutions for environmental sustainability.
