Ceramics and Metal Casting: Creation and Research – CERMET

The main interest of this research line is sculpture, with a special emphasis on the processes, materials, and techniques involved. Artistic metal casting is a central focus, both as a teaching discipline and a research specialty. Ceramics plays a key role as the primary material used in refractory mould-making processes for artistic casting.
Mª del Carmen Marcos (Valencia, 1965) is a Professor of Sculpture at the Universitat Politècnica de València since 2025 and holds a PhD in Fine Arts (awarded in 2001).
An active sculptor, her work revolves around metaphors and symbols, with a distinct interest in materials and their associated processes. Her conceptual reflections address themes such as literature as a creative stimulus for sculpture, the importance of manual craftsmanship in human development, and the dichotomy between art and craft.
She oversees the Casting Laboratory within the Sculpture Department of the San Carlos Faculty of Fine Arts (UPV, Valencia), where she conducts both her teaching and research.
She studied ceramics with Enric Mestre in 1994–95 and again during the final year of his tenure, in 2000–2001. Her mentors in casting include David Reid, Juan Carlos Albaladejo, and Rufino Mesa; in jewelry, Francisco Díaz Romero; and in sculpture, Ángeles Marco, Sebastiá Miralles, Ramón de Soto, and Vicente Ortí.
