This research group investigates the mechanisms underlying inflammatory processes, aiming to understand disease progression and identify new therapeutic targets. Using a combination of in vivo and in vitro models, including acute and chronic inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis. They study biochemical, radiological, histological, and molecular markers of disease.
Their work examines cartilage, synoviocytes, chondrocytes, osteoblasts, fibroblasts, and keratinocytes, focusing on gene and protein expression, signaling pathways, extracellular matrix metabolism, cytokine production, and cellular senescence. They explore the anti-inflammatory and regenerative potential of mesenchymal stem cells and extracellular vesicles as therapeutic agents and biomarkers.
The group also studies adenosine-related mechanisms in wound healing and inflammatory skin diseases, particularly in vulnerable populations such as diabetics, the elderly, and obese patients, combining cellular, molecular, and translational approaches to advance new therapies.
CV Prof. Mª Carmen Montesinos Mezquita
Carmen earned her PhD in Pharmacy in 1994 and developed an international research career, including a postdoctoral stay and faculty position at New York University Medical Center, where she focused on adenosine receptors and their role in inflammation and wound healing. In 2005, she joined the University of Valencia as a Ramón y Cajal researcher and is currently a Tenured Professor of Pharmacology.
Her research has made significant contributions to understanding the role of adenosine receptors in skin biology, inflammation, and diseases such as psoriasis, with publications in high-impact journals. She has authored 46 indexed papers (most in top-quartile journals), with over 3,000 citations and an h-index of 30.
Currently, her work focuses on the mechanisms underlying inflammatory skin diseases to improve therapeutic strategies. She is actively involved in national and international research networks and combines her research with strong teaching and supervision activity, having supervised numerous undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral theses.
